Senegal are Champions of Africa

Senegal claimed their second-ever Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title on Sunday, edging hosts Morocco 1–0 in a tense and dramatic final.

The decisive moment came deep into extra time, four minutes from the end, when Pape Gueye struck a stunning winner into the top-right corner, silencing the packed Moulay Abdellah Stadium and sending Senegalese supporters into celebration.

“Senegal are champions of Africa and we are so happy,” Gueye told French broadcaster M6. “It was a really difficult match, but we were determined to win. Morocco is a beautiful country with incredible supporters.”

The victory marks Senegal’s second AFCON triumph, following their maiden title in 2022 when they defeated Egypt on penalties.

Controversy and Late Drama

The final was not without controversy. In the closing moments of regulation time, Morocco were awarded a stoppage-time penalty, sparking heated protests from Senegalese players and staff, who briefly walked off the pitch in disagreement with the decision.

Morocco’s hopes were dealt a crushing blow when Real Madrid midfielder Brahim Díaz failed to convert the penalty, with Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy producing a calm and comfortable save.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino later condemned the scenes surrounding the incident, saying:
“We strongly condemn the behaviour of some ‘supporters’ as well as some Senegalese players and technical staff members. It is unacceptable to leave the field of play in this manner, and violence cannot be tolerated in our sport.”

CAF, African football’s governing body, refrained from assigning immediate blame but confirmed that “appropriate action” would be taken against anyone found guilty.

Heartbreak for the Hosts

Morocco were chasing their second AFCON title and their first since 1976. As Senegal’s late goal sealed the outcome, many of the 66,500 fans inside the stadium began to leave before the final whistle, their hopes dashed on a cold, wet night in Rabat.

“We are really disappointed for the Moroccan people,” said head coach Walid Regragui. “When you get a penalty in the last minute, victory feels very close. But football can be cruel. We congratulate Senegal, even though what happened at the end was disappointing for African football.”

Senegal’s Golden Moment

In the end, Senegal’s resilience, defensive discipline, and composure under pressure proved decisive. With back-to-back AFCON titles in 2022 and now again, the Lions of Teranga have firmly established themselves as one of Africa’s dominant footballing nations.

On a night filled with drama, controversy, and emotion, Senegal once again rose to the occasion—lifting the AFCON trophy and writing another proud chapter in their footballing history.
